What is a Direct Quote?
A direct quote is anything copied directly (that is, word for word) from a published source. It should always be enclosed within quotation marks. If it is not enclosed in quotes, then it is plagiarized. How should quotes be cited in the text? The reader must be able to find exactly where the direct quote originated. The reader needs to know three things: the author name(s), the year of publication, and the exact page number from the original source where the quote originated. Always use quotation marks when quoting directly. Here are two examples. Example 1: The author defines social psychology as the scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another (Myers, 2005, p. 4). A direct quote, also called a price quotation (although a price quotation is also used to refer to other things), is a foreign exchange rate quoted as home currency per foreign currency. A foreign exchange rate expresses one country’s currency, or money, in terms of another country’s currency and is usually quoted to between 4 and 6 decimal places. For example, France uses the euro (EUR), and suppose the EUR stated as a unit, were worth half of the U.S. Dollar (USD). In the U.S., a direct quote for France would be 0.5 dollars per 1 euro. In France, or any country that uses the euro as its currency, a direct quote for the U.S. would be 2 euros per 1 dollar. This also means if a person from France wanted to exchange 500 EUR for USD, he would get 250 dollars back. If a person from the U.S. traded 500 USD for EUR, he would get 1,000 euros back. A direct quote is an exact, word for word copy of the original source. For example, In a paper analyzing primary sources such as literary works, you will use direct quotation extensively to illustrate and support your analysis (Aaron 257). This quote comes from the source exactly as the author had written it. A direct quotation usually corresponds exactly to the source’s spelling, capitalization and interior punctuation. Direct quotes must use a lead-in or tag phrase. In other words, direct quotes must be attached to your own writing. If you look at the above direct quote, you will notice the phrase For example, which is enough to satisfy the lead-in requirement. When attributing a quote to an author in your text, the following verbs will prove helpful: notes, argues, observes, writes, emphasizes, says, reports, suggests, claims, and comments.
