Why can I login as root via ssh?

You need to comment out the line ‘CONSOLE=/dev/console’ in /etc/default/login (You may also need to make a change to /etc/ssh/sshd_config). Note: Direct remote logins are disabled by default because doing so (slightly) improves security. If you change this setting then you do so at your own risk.
