Not necessarily! While it is true that resolving injury is not always comfortable, it is not necessarily painful. Everyone experiences injury differently and likewise, resolving injury is different for everyone. I think it is important to remember that oftentimes our mental and emotional relationship to the injury is more painful than the physical damage. Which is to say that our fear of what it means to be injured (Will I ever be able to dance again? Are my running days over? Will I now have to live on painkillers?) often has a much more profound effect on how we respond to treatment than we think. So, yes, sometimes (certainly not always) the recovery process hurts – and sometimes on many different levels. However, a lot of people fall asleep or achieve profound relaxation during treatment. After all, it feels good to have pain and injury released from our bodies!
