When I load an otf or a type1 font most of my references have been replaced by inline copies. How do I get my references back?

It is very difficult to figure out old references when loading postscript fonts. Instead FontForge has a special command, Edit->Replace With Reference, that will search for potential reference candidates in the font and replace them with references.
