What is a DRE?
DRE stands for Digital Rectal Examination. The doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the patient’s rectum to determine if there are any abnormalities in the shape and consistency of the gland. Because the prostate is situated immediately in front of the rectum, the doctor can feel the prostate through the rectal wall. A normal prostate is smooth and firm, but not hard. While the procedure is uncomfortable, it is generally painless and quick. It is recommended that men have both the DRE and PSA (below) as complementary tests.
