What is good about the three gorges dam?
The dam will produce as much energy as 15 nuclear power stations. This energy is vital to ease China’s addiction to coal, which has devastating effects for the entire country. Acid rain threatens a third of China; respiratory diseases are often fatal. Whilst coal is still used for almost 80% of China’s energy supply, millions of lives are endangered. This scheme could replace up to 50 million tons of coal needed to supply the country itself, which means China would be able to export more of the coal it produces.
