What is an Ohm for a car audio system?
An ohm is a measure of resistance. In audio, the fancy shmancy word is impedance, which is resistance to an audio signal. The lower the amount of ohms, the less the resistance there is in the circuit, and consequently the more power is going to flow through the circuit, creating heat, which is bad for electronics and can be unstable. In car audio, most measurements for head units and amps are taken at 4 ohms, which is what the majority of speakers are rated at. At 2 ohms, you can figure there will be twice the amount of power than at 4 ohms. At 1 ohm, there is 4X as many watts, and so on. That’s all with regulated power supplies, but there’s not many amps with regulated power supplies, though so those amounts will usually vary somewhat.
