What is a Construction Barrier?

0

A construction barrier is used to keep unauthorized people or animals out of a construction area.  The specific types of barriers that are used primarily depend on the magnitude, location, and duration of the construction that is taking place.

Barriers may be thought of as temporary or more permanent in nature. Permanent barriers are typically constructed of some type of heavy-duty fencing or walls, whereas temporary barriers are usually fashioned out of warning tape and rebar, plastic or chain-link fencing, or movable concrete forms.  In addition, reflective materials are often used to supplement the barriers, mainly to increase general visual acuity and thus alert motorists and pedestrians of the barriers’ presences.

Construction barriers should not be confused with silt fencing.  Silt fencing is normally installed around the perimeter of newly excavated construction sites.  It is composed of a black fabric around three feet in height, and is typically staked into the ground via wooden stakes. A silt fence can be conceived of as a type of filter; rainwater that falls on the raw, exposed earth of the new construction sites will collect silt, or sediment, and the silt fence’s primary purpose is to prevent the silt/sediment from flowing into local sewer systems and natural bodies of water.  The fact that the silt fencing may be visually perceived as a type barrier is a merely an added bonus, nothing more.

Most licensed contractors are familiar with what types of barriers must be erected during any specific construction processes (hopefully), in terms of following code. However, for those who are not already aware of the local codes or practices, it would be prudent to consult the local permitting office to know exactly what will be needed for any particular job; various types of regulations may require the use of these barriers when construction is taking place.  Although construction barriers are certainly not guaranteed to be completely effective, as far as keeping all unauthorized people out of the site, they may prevent legal liability.

A simple google search of “construction barrier” will quickly reveal a host of merchants who will readily sell any materials a private citizen or company needs for installation of the barriers.

A construction barrier is any sort of barrier that is used to keep unauthorized personnel out of a construction area. This may include the use of fencing, concrete barriers or even warning tape, depending on the situation and the level of danger involved should anyone wander into the area. A construction barrier can also be used to help protect green areas from disturbance by heavy machinery and foot traffic. While most construction barriers are temporary in nature, there are some that can be considered permanent. A permanent construction barrier is one of the types of barriers that stays up for a significant period of time, perhaps even after construction is completed; usually some sort of fencing. During the construction, it serves as a natural barrier. After the construction, it still serves as a divider, privacy or sound barrier. These are common in residential construction zones. The other type of barrier is the temporary construction barrier. These are often put up very quickly a
