What is auto clay?
Auto clay is a clay bar used to remove contaminates across the surface of paint that cannot be removed during normal washing. In the detailing industry, auto clay is also known as detailing clay. This clay removes dirt within the paints clear coat. Clear coat contamination can occur from bird droppings, air particles, tar, and dust particles. You simply apply automotive clay to the paints surface after washing, but before waxing. Though auto clay bars are abrasive, if used correctly the clay will not scratch your paint.
Applying Auto Clay
Before automotive clay can be applied, the surface must be washed thoroughly. Cut a small portion of the clay off; knead it in your hand, until it becomes pliable. You will then flatten the clay until it is about half of an inch thick. Spray a large amount of clay lubricant on the surface of the area you are working on first. Slide the auto clay back and forth across the wet area without applying any pressure. As the clay glides across the wet surface, you will be able to feel and hear the removal of contaminates from the paints surface. As the auto clay becomes dirty you can fold it, and re-knead it until a fresh coat appears. Periodical checking of the clay for larger contaminates will help you to prevent scratching the paint. When finished, remove the lubricant using a shammy or microfiber towel then move on to the next section.
Lasting Benefits
Auto clay can be used as an alternative to rubbing compounds when detailing your car. Rubbing compounds have abrasives that will rub down the paints surface and eventually breakdown the paints protective system overtime. Japanese engineers developed automotive clay as an alternative in the early 1990’s. The clay removes contaminates in the paint, and it prepares the paints surface for waxing. When applying the wax after the clay process the results are mind-blowing. Waxing after the clay process seals the paint and adds luster. Choosing a quality wax is essential. Apply more than one coat of wax for quality and added protection.
Auto clay is a special type of clay used to prepare auto paint for subsequent waxing by safely removing contaminants and old wax. Auto clay can polish the surface of the vehicle without harming the paint, making it safer to use than abrasive cleaners. This product was once reserved for professionals only, but has found its way into the consumer market much to the delight of auto enthusiasts. Nothing preserves auto paint better or brings out its beauty and luster like a good wax and seal, but before these products can be applied, the surface of the vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned. Washing with gentle soap is a good place to start, but this won’t remove old wax or stubborn particles lodged in the surface of the paint. Industrial fallout, brake dust and grit from the road can all become embedded in the paint’s protective clear coat. The standard method to remove grit and grime prior to auto clay was to use polishing compounds. Compounds contain abrasives that “sand” the surface clean.
