Why is Mars red?

Mars is red because it is rusting. There is a large amount of oxidized (rusted) iron in the soil. Oxidized iron can look brown, yellow, orange or red depending on the amount of oxidation that has occurred.

Oxygen from water and from the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere combined with minerals, mainly iron, in the rocks and dust. It is this oxidised iron, the rust, that gives Mars its red colour. Return to top.
