What is a Grandfather Clock?
A Grandfather clock, also known as a Tall-Case, Longcase, or Floor Clock, is a pendulum clock that is both freestanding and weight-driven, with a pendulum held inside the case. First created in 1670, the design is credited to the English clockmaker William Clement. This style of clock averages between 1.8 and 2.4 meters, or 6-8 feet, tall, the case is typically fashioned with elaborate carvings on the “hood” or “bonnet” surrounding the face of the clock. These clocks are designed to be what is termed “Striking” clocks. Meaning they will sound the time every hour and/or fraction of the hour. “Grandfather Clock”? Three terms have been used to describe longcase clocks, these terms are “Granddaughter” “Grandmother” and “Grandfather”. Despite the fact that there is no true distinction between them, it is generally accepted that a longcase clock that stands at less than 1.5 meters is a Granddaughter clock, any clock over 1.5 meters is considered a Grandmother clock, and anything greater than
A grandfather clock has a clock face, pendulum and weights enclosed in a thin, tall freestanding wooden case. The grandfather clock has also been known by the names longcase clock, tall-case clock and floor clock. William Clement, an English clockmaker developed the longcase clock form in 1670. The name grandfather clock for a tall-case clock is thought to have come from the 1875 song, My Grandfather’s Clock, by Henry Clay Work. The typical grandfather clock is about 6 feet (1.8 m) to 8 feet (2.4 m) high. The wooden part of the clock that encases the clock face is called the bonnet, or hood. Often, the bonnet of a grandfather clock has elaborate carvings such as spindles. Wood types used for grandfather clocks vary, but oak and mahogany are the most popular woods used to make antique grandfather clocks. An antique grandfather clock usually has a painted or brass dial. Some antique grandfather clocks have a moon or rocket ship motif. A grandfather clock is a striking clock as it strikes
A grandfather clock is a floor clock that is operated by the movement of a swinging pendulum and suspended weights enclosed in a tall cabinet. How Do Grandfather Clocks Work? The pendulum swings back and forth by the force of gravity allowing the weights to drop at given paces. The functions of the clock are then driven by the movement of the weights. The weights are either suspended by chains or cables and need to be adjusted periodically to keep proper time. Grandfather clocks are very accurate and can keep time to within one minute per month. Are Grandfather Clocks Hard to Set Up? Actually they are much easier to set up than you might think. This is because you are doing just that, setting it up and not building it. All that is required is a little time and some basic tools. Most grandfather clocks even come with an instructional video showing how to set it up and take proper care of it. There is a good blog post about using clocks to stage a home that I found quite informative and it got me interested in buying a clock for my den. So I’ve been browsing the Internet, looking around for the perfect clock. I came across a picture of a really cool clock that I want to buy for my den. This particular clock that I found that I want for my den is a grandfather clock, but I never would have thought of it as a grandfather clock! It is quite different than any clock I ever would have imagined to be considered a grandfather clock! I’ve always thought of grandfather clocks as imposing massive wooden structures that take up a large space in a stuffy formal living room, but this one that I found that I like is skinny and sleek and reminds me more of a old fashioned la
