WHAT IS ACRYLIC?
Acrylic is a transparent (synthetic) material that we use instead of glass. • Acrylic is a type of plastic that derives its name from the chemical compound of which it is composed. It is made of clear, thermoplastic resins that are found in acrylic acid and natural sources like petroleum. Like all thermoplastics, acrylic becomes pliable when heated and rigid when cooled. • Acrylic features: Attractive: The outdoor feeling of Acrylic creates a handsome decorative focus for your home. Affordable: Not only do you pay less for Acrylic than for safety tempered glass, but ease of handling makes installation less expensive. Comfort: Solar tints reduce extreme heat build up. Design Flexibility: Wider panels mean less framing members. Longer panels mean wider rooms. Custom shapes are handled easily. Efficient: Acrylic panels have good insulating properties (up to 50% better than single pane glass), so you can save on the cost of heating. Privacy: Tinted glazing for maximum privacy. Strong: Acry
Acrylic is a useful, clear plastic that resembles glass, but has properties that make it superior to glass in many ways. Common brands of high-grade acrylic include Polycast, Lucite and Plexiglass. There are two basic types of acrylic: extruded and cell cast. Extruded or “continuous cast” acrylic is made by a less expensive process, is softer, can scratch easier and may contain impurities. Cell cast acrylic is a higher quality acrylic and U.S. domestic cell cast is a good choice for applications that require the best. Imported cell cast acrylic is often manufactured to lesser standards. Acrylic is used to make various products, such as shower doors, bath enclosures, windows and skylights. It is chosen over glass for many reasons. It is many times stronger than glass, making it much more impact resistant and therefore safer. Falling against an acrylic shower door will not likely break it. Baseballs that crash through glass windows will, in most cases, bounce off acrylic windows. Acrylic
Acrylic, or polymethyl methacrylate, sheet is a glassy thermoplastic used for weatherability, ease of fabrication and light weight. Industries have found it to be a good material for applications that require high impact resistance and good weatherability. With polycarbonate as its chief competitor, acrylic continues to venture into new territories with fresh developments and groundbreaking technologies. When taking a close look at some of the many common uses of acrylic, it doesn’t take long to realize it is everywhere. One of its most popular markets is POP displays and store fixtures. It also is used nearly everywhere in shopping malls around the world in signage and displays. Due to the affordability of this product as well as its flexible design capabilities, acrylic is a perfect match for this market. Acrylic was initially commercialized in the early 1930s and was first used in World War II for aircraft windshields and canopies. That application is still being used today, althoug
