Russia’s invasion of Georgia is best understood in the context of the USSR era Soviet Union. In the time of the Soviet Union, Georgia was a mix of many ethnicities and cultures, and to this day maintains that diversity. An ethnic group known as the Ossesians, geographically in Georgia, but who consider themselves Russian ethnically, decided that they no longer wanted to be part of Georgia. Seeing this declaration as a potential to regain lost territory, Russia invaded Georgia with the intent of annexing as much territory as allowable by international appeasement, but with the guise of assisting their culturally similar and ethnically dependant brothers in a struggle for independance.

georgia’s leader pissed off the russians somehow, and the russians want to flex their muscles…and show the rest of the world..us that they are willing to fight for what they want, and wont back down again…I think they are gambling that nobody will intervene, militarily to help the former soviet republic, cause it might lead to an actual war, that’s why we are hesitant to help georgia.
