What is adult education?
Adult Education programs help adults learn basic skills needed to be more productive workers and better informed community members. These programs provide learning opportunities in a variety of settings such as classroom (traditional and online) and one-on-one tutoring. Depending on each learner’s needs, instruction can include reading, writing, math, life and English language competency skills. ESL classes are for students who want to improve their English language skills. Classes include basic English competencies such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The Adult Education department at Florida Community College operates programs designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn the basic and academic skills necessary to obtain a high school diploma and/or be prepared for the workforce. We also offer additional academic options for students such as dual enrollment and co-enrollment.
Adult education is the teaching or training of adults. This education can take place in a variety of settings. As an adult educator, you may teach large classrooms of students at the college or university level, or small groups of adults in a corporate setting. Adult educators may even find themselves working with students on an individual basis. An adult educator typically has some education and/or work experience in a specific field. A degree in adult education builds upon their education and work experience, qualifying them to not only to work in their particular field, but to teach skills in that field as well. Adult educators encourage and enable adults to further their education. If you think you may want to pursue a major in this field, you should: • love to teach, • have strong interpersonal skills, and • work well with diverse populations. Adult education is a field of education that deals with the teaching of adults. There is no standard definition for what qualifies as adult education beyond this broad definition. This type of education may involve adult basic education, such as curriculum materials used to prepare individuals for a high school diploma equivalent certificate, such as a GED. It can also include many other various types of continuing education classes, some of which get to be quite technical and complicated. Generally speaking, adult education is not considered to be typical university classes for those who have come out of high school. Though, by that time, these students are technically adults, this is considered a traditional college education. However, while simply going to college after high school graduation may not qualify, many colleges may have adult education classes or perhaps even an entire adult education school.
