How did Petit Bateau start?
Originally this was started as a mutual support and information sharing list prior to the OSTAR in 2000. We had noticed that the race requirements were tending towards the big-budget, high-tech campaigns to the possible exclusion of the more Corinthian entrants, and with the splitting of the race into large and small classes in successive years our prediction has proved accurate. The aim was and is to promote and further the efforts of sailors with smaller boats and budgets, and make sure their voice could be heard thus retaining the ‘One Person, One Boat, The Sea’ philosophy of Blondie Hasler, Francis Chichester et al. The idea was always international – original joiners were from three countries – and there are now members in sixteen countries.
