What are SUGARS?
Sugars are carbohydrates, which serve as the main energy source for the body. There are many types of sugars. They occur both in fresh foods and are added as ingredients to many foods. Any sweetener which ends with “…ose” is a sugar. Sugars include sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose, galactose and maltose and are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and flour, cereal and milk products. The most familiar sugar is sucrose (table sugar). It is made of two simple sugars, fructose and glucose. Other sugars used in foods include maltodextrin, corn syrup, honey (a mixture of sugars), lactose (milk sugar) and other syrups.
