What is a learning gain?
A learning gain (significant or meaningful gain) can be defined in a number of ways. For the purposes of ACLS reporting, a learning gain represents a statistically significant increase in skills / knowledge as measured by one of the standardized assessments (Best Plus, REEP, TABE) or one of the non-standardized tests (e.g., Beginning Literacy or Pre Literacy ESOL) which are measured by one GLE. The Center for Educational Assessment at the U Mass Amherst recommended the number of scaled score points for the standardized assessments, and ACLS uses those amounts in the performance standard for learning gains.
