What is Perpetual Care?
Legislation requires the Burial Park to deduct from the purchase price of every grave, crypt and niche a contribution to the Burial Park Care Fund. As well, legislation also requires contributions to be made whenever a memorial of any type is installed at the cemetery. The minimum amount to be contributed to the Care Fund is set out by provincial law. The income from the care fund is used to provide care and maintenance at the Burial Park. Regular care and maintenance activities include: cutting grass, trimming around all markers and monuments, leveling of sunken graves, planting and caring for trees, maintenance of water supply systems, roads, drainage, etc.
We currently use the term Endowed Care. You may also have heard it referred to as Permanent Care. Any of these terms refer to the continued care of the lawn, grounds, plant material, roadways, and water and drainage systems within the cemetery. (It does not refer to care of your marker or vase. Care of these items is the responsibility of the owner.) However, the cemetery will, upon request or when we note a safety concern, raise and level markers and vases at no cost. And we can arrange (for a fee) for the refinishing of markers whose finish has weathered. When in doubt, simply call the office and see if we can help.
More appropriately defined as endowed care, these funds are essential for the continued maintenance and care of lots, roads, buildings and features in the cemetery. A portion of each lot or crypt purchase price is placed in a permanently restricted care fund. The interest earned by the funds on deposit is used to offset the aforementioned maintenance costs.
