Why is Humane Education important?

0

Several issues demonstrate the need for a concerted Humane Education effort: exotic animals as pets, habitat destruction, lack of spending time in nature to understand and appreciate it, the pet overpopulation crisis, and the cycle of animal abuse and domestic violence.

Humane Education is valuable because it fosters that special magic that exists between children and animals. “Children trained to extend justice, kindness and mercy toward animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding and, in every respect, more valuable citizens.” Studies have shown that children who are compassionate toward animals tend to mature into adults who are concerned and compassionate about the world and those with whom they share it. Children who lack the ability to empathize with animals often also lack deep connections with other people. In the 1970s, the FBI discovered that many inmates on death row admitted to having tortured or killed an animal as a child. Please contact our Education Department or call (415) 506-6258.
