For the most part CT is the preferred modality for evaluating tumors involving the chest, abdomen and pelvis, with MRI preferred for brain, skeletal and spine imaging. The main advantage to CT is that it a very short exam (usually less than a minute scan time, whereas MRI exams are at least 20 minutes.
