How painful is it to treat veins?
Fortunately nowadays almost all varicose and spider veins can be removed with non-surgical minimally invasive procedures that are performed in a doctor’s office. As to the level of pain experienced during a procedure, it will depend on the nature of the vein (varicose or spider veins) it’s location (facial or leg), the treatment modality (laser, injections, or endovenous vein treatment), and of course, the expertise of the doctor treating the veins. However, in almost all cases, patients are able to tolerate the pain easily because of the use of local anesthesia. Some patients need to take over-the-counter pain-killers for the first few days following endovenous vein treatment, which is the procedure for treating large and bulging leg varicose veins. Spider vein removal with injections (sclerotherapy) on the other hand, is almost painless because of the use of extremely tiny needles and the use of anesthesia in the injected solution.
