What is the shelf life of blood?
Whole blood can be stored under refrigeration no longer than five weeks. Once frozen, red blood cells can be stored up to ten years. Red blood cells are considered transfusable for up to six weeks, depending on the preservative used. Fresh platelet concentrates are transfusable for a maximum of five days.
