What is a Freight Forwarder?
Freight Forwarder means a person holding itself out to the general public to provide transportation of property for compensation in interstate commerce, and in the ordinary course of its business: • Performs or provides for assembling, consolidating, break-bulk, and distribution of shipments; • Assumes responsibility for transportation from place of receipt to destination; and • Uses for any part of the transportation authorized for-hire motor carriers. Freight forwarders must register with FMCSA by filing a Form OP-1(FF), Application for Freight Forwarder Authority. Once you have been assigned an FF Number, to complete the application process, you must register with the FMCSA: Proof of Insurance and Process Agent Coverage — $5,000 cargo insurance and a BOC-3 Form, Designation of Process Agents.
