How can I switch a tape from a CRON backup for FreeBSD that requires more than one tape?

My unattended cron backup requires more then one tape. I set D_CRON_MULTI to ‘Y’ inside ‘/usr/lone-tar/ENV’. I do see the message to remove vol-1 and insert vol-2 for only 3 seconds, then the Master backup aborts. I am using a single 4mm DAT tape drive, not a robotic unit.
