Lucky you! You are speaking to a trumpet player, from 6th grade all the way through the University of Florida and its Wind Ensembles, Jazz Bands, Basketball Pep Band, and Marching Band. If you have a child that wants to learn to play the trumpet, here is how I would do it. Sometime around Kindergarten, I would suggest having your child learn to play piano, recorder, or some other instrument that lends itself to a younger student to give them a good foundation in music theory, and the ability to learn to read music and understand notes, scales, etc. Understanding how to read music will give your child a big leg up when it is time to learn any instrument later. Around 4th grade, you could on your own get a trumpet and start giving your child private lessons. I don’t really think learning it any sooner than that is a good idea as it would be difficult for your child at that stage of growth to develop good breathing technique and a good embouchure — both of which probably require
