Optimal IDPN solution composition is unknown; however, a typical IDPN prescription contains amino acids in amounts to meet estimated daily protein requirements, as well as dextrose and 20% or 30% lipid components to increase the caloric impact of the IDPN. Substrate infusion rates are adjusted upward as tolerated to enhance caloric intake while preventing or managing hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia (“KDOQI clinical practice guideline for nutrition in children with CKD: 2008 update,” 2009).
