How much water does my lawn need?
Under normal circumstances, early morning is the best time to water your lawn so that the leaves can dry slowly and naturally without too much evaporation. However,if your lawn shows symptoms of drought then you should water it immediately irrespective of the time of day. Regular, fairly deep watering is better than daily light sprinklings.
A healthy lawn needs 30 to 45 minutes of even coverage 3 or 4 times a week during prime growing season. Warmer weather needs more and colder and rainy weather needs less.
Long and deep watering (versus short and frequent) will encourage root growth.
The best time to water is early in the morning. Watering over night will encourage fungus and watering in the heat of the day may cause root damage by effectively boiling the roots. Try to time it so that the watering finishes just as the sun is coming up.
Protip: Keep a close eye on the blades of the grass. If they are curling up, the lawn needs more water.
