The increase in carbon dioxide causes the increase in pH of the blood, this is detected by the chemoreceptors and a message sent via sensory neurones to the medulla, this causes a message to travel down the motor neurones to the intercostal muscles which cause an increase in contraction and relaxation, and hence increased ventilation. Increased ventilation causes more oxygen to dissociate from red blood cells reducing pH and therefore sending an inhibitory message via the chemoreceptors to the medulla, reducing ventilation rate. This is called a negative feedback response.
