Who studies in Quomi madrasas?
Around 80% of students in madrasas come from economically backward class, mostly orphan. Most madrasas provide free lodging and meal and free books and reading materials. Many madrasas have been virtually acting as orphanages for the poor. Although education in government run primary and secondary schools are virtually free still students must buy writing materials, school uniform and depend on parents to be fed. However, once a young student gets into the madrasa system most of these expenses are taken care of by the madrasa authorities through charity. Recently it has been observed that even some middle income families are also sending their children to madrasas on the belief this would be an act of piety. Many expatriates, who work in the Middle Eastern countries, often send their children to madrasas back home on the perception that once they graduate from madrasas they will be qualified for a lucrative job in the Middle East.
