You must amend the previous tax return within 3 years from the original tax date, if you received a tax refund. • Make copies of the forms or schedules such as W-2s that were received after the original tax return were filed. • Obtain an Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return or Form 1040X. • You can call the IRS and have a 1040X sent by mail or visit its website and download the form. • Read the instructions. • The area on the back of the amended form explains the reasons for changes and why the changes are needed. • Fill out the amended tax form. The form has three columns. • Column A is the amount on the original tax return. • Column C is the amount for the corrected amount. • Subtract columns C from A or vice versa. • Column B is the difference between columns A and C. • Attach the copies of the forms or schedules to the amended tax return. • Mail
