the columns are called groups and there are 8 or 18 of them ( depending on if you use the CAS or IUPAC group), they define the groups of elements on the periodic table. Ex. Group one is called the alkali metals. the small numbers in the corners are the atomic number and the numbers with decimals are the atomic mass.
