Answer Hi Breanna, The basic problem was that the north and south were growing more divided over slavery. Northerners generally saw slavery as unjust to the slaves and a contradiction with the values under which the US was founded. The South saw slavery as an economic necessity. Many also believed that free blacks (who most northern and southern whites believed to be inferior to whites) would lead to many social problem because they would not work and would behave as criminals. Up until that time, the north and south generally avoided the issue by banning it in the north, protecting it in the south and allowing both sides to expand west at an equal rate (so that power in Congress would remain equal). However, in the 1850’s many politicians started challenging that balance. The Supreme Court tried to “solve” the dispute by requiring that southerners be allowed to take their slaves to the north. Other laws required northerners to cooperate in returning runaway slaves to southern bondage.
