” Do not assume the model considers “systems engineering” to be a particular organizational group. Most models do not specify who performs the systems engineering activities, just that they need to be done. Do not make the mistake of assuming your “systems engineers” have to do everything, including configuration management, training, or program planning and tracking. While your systems engineers will need to be involved in these processes (managing the configuration of items they work on; requesting, taking, and possibly even planning training; and providing estimates and measurement data to program managers), many processes are run by groups other than those called “systems engineers.” Furthermore, most subsystem areas, including software development, also have to perform systems engineering activities such as trade studies among potential architectures and validation against user need.
