Why did Sylvia Plath commit suicide?
Sylvia struggled with severe depression for a long time. In her partly autobiographical book, The Bell Jar, you get a glimpse into just how dark her world really was at times, which you can also see in some of her poetry. She attempted suicide multiple times, and finally succeeded in 1963 by sticking her head in an oven. Even the way she killed herself was almost poetic in a way. She was always opposed to domestic life, being a mother, cleaning, cooking etc. so the fact that she killed herself using an oven is quite ironic.
Because she was a crazy manic depressive. Plath, Plath, Plath…. did she write that crazy short story about the woman with the heart condition who is told her husband is dead (killed in a train accident), and she gets super excited about it, but then her husband walks in the front door and she has a heart attack? Because if she is, then she is a brilliant, crazy, manic depressive!
