Why don we make more compost from the organic fraction of waste rather generate energy?
In most wastes the most valuable component for composting is the organic content. However high quality compost, with a real market value, will only be achieved by source separation of putrescible organic material. There still remains a substantial fraction of organic material that due to mixed material, contamination or health and safety will not be extractible at source and or through a recycling plant. It makes sense that energy recovery from this material is the last way of extracting value and that as this material is renewable this can count towards the renewables obligation.
