Is tipping really compulsory in the US?
Interesting question..didn’t know that about NZ. Tipping is not necessarily a mandatory/compulsory adjective here in the US, depends on what it is. Tipping is simply a gesture of appreciation! However, it is a standard practice for those who have hourly jobs with fairly low wages, plus tipping is an incentive for them to provide a pleasing service.
