Should I have implants placed under (submuscular) or above (subglandular) the pectoralis muscle?
Submuscular placement provides a soft, natural appearing result for those starting with little breast tissue and may allow for more thorough mammograms. Some studies show there is a reduced risk of capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue surrounding the implant) with submuscular placement. When there is enough original breast tissue and skin has good elasticity, subglandular placement is the most anatomically correct, since that is where breast tissue is naturally located. Today, radiology technicians are proficient in performing thorough mammograms even with subglandular implants.
