What is a slug burger?
A slug burger is merely a mixture of some type of bread extender (such as cornmeal or soybean grits) and pork or beef. It’s patted into a thin patty approximately 1/4″ thick. Sometimes it is thicker, but I find that they aren’t quite as good that way. This patty is then deep fried to a gold brown in vegetable oil. I’ve used canola oil and couldn’t find that much of a difference. Once cooked, carefully remove each patty and press out the excess oil / fat using a thick amount of paper towels. Apply a slice of cheese to a bun, place the burger on the cheese, add some pickles, mustard and onions. And, ENJOY! The term “slug burger” probably derives from the patty color. It can also be said that they may have gotten their name from the slang for nickel (“Slug”); which at the time these burgers were first introduced they were sold for 5 cents each. At-any-rate my friend…there’s nothing “SLUG” about it. If you haven’t had one, you don’t know what you’re missing! Mmmm, now I’m craving one. Ta
