THURSDAY, March 4 (HealthDayNews) — Women with a history of preeclampsia may have a higher risk of developing cancer, especially cancers of the stomach, breast, ovary, lung and larynx, a new study says. The findings, while preliminary, suggest there might be some common environmental or genetic factor undergirding both preeclampsia and cancer. The authors of the study, which appears in the March 6 edition of the British Medical Journal, stress, however, that there’s no reason for women to panic. Preeclampsia, a condition that occurs during pregnancy, is marked by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. It can cause a host of problems, even death, for both the mother and the fetus. Previous studies have shown either no association between preeclampsia and cancer or have indicated that the former may actually protect against the latter.
