What Word Processor for OSX?
From Charlie Michelson After purchasing an Intel iMac, I decided that AppleWorks had come to the end of the line. The characters shown on screen are extremely ugly. It was time for a new word processor. My needs were for something that would be intuitive to use, save in RTF, and do rudimentary page layout. Candidates were Mariner Write 3.5.1, Nisus Writer Express 2.7, and Mellel 2.1.1. I have yet to look at NeoOffice (124 mb download). I have not heard much good about Apple’s Pages. Mellel requires you to export to RTF. Not as good as doing with Save As and Save. None of the three could handle images or page layouts very well. Either they could not move the image around free-form or the exported image was oversized. With Mellel you could probably eventually get the look you wanted after placing an image. Mariner Write felt very comfortable, like an old-time Mac application – in a good sense. Mellel seemed the ticket if you were writing a technical paper and wanted considerable control
