One of Australia’s most recognisable land formations. Situated several hundred kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, this ancient sandstone monolith rises 348 metres and measures 9.4 kilometres in circumference. An international tourist attraction, it is known for its many springs, waterholes, caves and ancient paintings, as well as its native flora and fauna. Uluru (once known as Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) form the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a World Heritage-listed site. In 1985, the Commonwealth Government handed the park’s title back to its traditional owners, the Anangu people. They, in turn, granted the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service a 99-year lease, meaning the park is now jointly managed by the traditional owners and Parks Australia.
