Who must belong to PSERS?

0

All full-time or part-time salaried employees of a school employer (school district, community college or other), must be reported as being employed. A part-time hourly or part-time per diem employee, while enrolled from the start, doesn’t become a member of PSERS until that employee reaches 500 hours of 80 days employment in that school year. The 500 hours or 80 days may be accumulated in multiple districts within the same year. The employer has the option as to whether or not retirement contributions are withheld from the start and reported to PSERS. Part-time employees who have not previously established PSERS membership may waive participation in PSERS if they are contributing to an IRA. The employee must tell the employer that they wish to waive membership. The employer will report the information to PSERS. PSERS sends the appropriate application to the employee for completion and determines if the employee is eligible to waive membership.
