What does QDRO mean?
A QDRO is a qualified domestic relations order. This is usually a court order that a state divorce court enters in order to assist a company with the division or assignment of rights regarding retirement benefits or other accrued assets. These are often company-specific, meaning that the attorney will have to write the company and get their “magic language” for incorporation into the QDRO, so that the local court will be putting the order in the specific form needed by the company. In other words, these companies have to administratively handle the assignment of assets for their clients (who come from all 50 states), and it is much easier if the divorce courts all use the same “template” language for the company’s benefit, than for each company to get thousands of different court orders from the various jurisdictions (each with different language in them).
