Refers to the process where the artwork has two mats bordering it. When mats are layered in a frame, the top mat forms the main border and the bottom mat (generally 1/8″ or 1/4″) shows around the image. Double mats are used to bring out the accent colors of an artwork and give the framed art an extra sense of depth.
