VOLVO S-80 Needs Repair?

I have 1999 Volvo S-80. I see Check engine lights. Some times the brakes go numb/hard to push, next moment they are good again. Is it advisable to spend money at Volvo dealer or regular service station. I have seen regular service mechanics have no clue about Volvo stuff. A: A common problem with S80’s-S60’s-XC70-70 series cars is the brake booster will leak causing a hard pedal, a vacuum hissing noise from under your dash and when bad enough will cause an engine light due to a serious vacuum light. The brake booster is run off of the engine vacuum and the booster has a diaphram, sometime over age and use the diaphram will get a hole in it causing a leak which doesn’t give you the boost to push the pedal as easily. The Volvo dealers stock these boosters because they are so common. Have the engine light checked out, it probably will be a short term fuel trim code like P0171. The light could also be totally unrelated.
