Is Rolfing Extremely Painful?
No. It is important that the you are able to “be with” the work, not tensing up or having to distract yourself from painful sensations. This is because your relaxed awareness is valuable in making the changes of Rolfing more far-reaching and permanent. The Rolfer will pay attention for any signs that you are feeling pain, and will ask you frequently how much intensity you are experiencing. Working at the right level should feel more like scratching a deep itch, satisfying and relieving. Sometimes it will be uncomfortable, sometimes delightful, but in the end, you decide what your limits are. Rolfers are also trained to find alternate ways of working that are comfortable for different clients.
