Whales are killed for food by communities/nations that consider them a delicacy either under special dispensation or in the case of Japan under the euphemism of “scientific whaling” although it is quite obvious that no worthwhile scientific research is being conducted.

There is no scentific reason for this. It is being killed by different countries with different reasons. in the olden days whales were killed for their balleen and for the oil from their head and ofcourse the meat. The ballen is nothing but keratin which is same as our finger nails. Many whales do not have teeth but they have balleen for filtering the sea water and eating the krill fishes. Balleen was used in the manufacturing of many things like womens corsets. The whale oil which was rich in fat was used in lamps. These are all 18th century usages. Nowadays we don’t have any use for the whale parts. We have richer petroleum oil, flourscent lamps and plastics. But still we hunt them. Japanese hunt them for their meat. In Japan whale meat is highly preferred and they hunt whales under the disguise of sceintific research. They hunt more than 500 whales every year (legally). No body knows the real number. Lot of other countries too hunt them for their individual tribes sustenance. For e.
