Why Is BBT Charting Helpful?
Charting your basal body temperature is helpful in determining when and if ovulation occurs. Body temperature normally rises after ovulation due to hormonal changes. Thus, a temperature increase near the middle of your menstrual cycle can indicate ovulation has occurred. Charting your BBT can help you predict your most fertile period or ovulation in future months. By carefully recording your basal temperature each morning when you first awaken, you will begin to notice a pattern of temperature fluctuations in your monthly cycle. The slight increase in basal temperature is an indication of ovulation or high fertility. During the first two weeks of your cycle, your body temperature is lower (96.0-97.5 F). During ovulation, a rise in body temperature takes place. This is caused by an increase of the hormone progesterone in order to provide a warmer, more fertile environment.
