What is a hustler?
A hustler is a prostitute that finds clients through face-to-face interaction, usually in bars or on the streets. In the 1970’s there were some prostitutes that used hustling as a way to pay for college. Nowadays virtually all regular hustlers are runaways and/or hustling to pay for drugs. Some occasional hustlers, especially those that work in bars, are dabblers who are hustling either for the thrill or for extra money. Hustlers tend to be young, although some work up into their mid-twenties or beyond. Transgender prostitutes who work from the streets fall into this category, although the term hustler does not apply to them very well. Transgender prostitutes may be using their money to pay for drugs, but are more likely using it to save for sex reassignment surgery, hormonal treatment, and required counseling to obtain the former.
