What Do the Latest Poll Numbers Mean?

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: Different polls, different results — same two candidates. What’s going on here? For more on how those polls are taken and why they sometimes disagree dramatically, I’m joined by the man in charge of the Gallup poll, editor-in-chief Frank Newport. OK, Frank, talk to us to about this. We sort of did a quick run- through all these numbers, but dissect it for us. What do these latest numbers mean? FRANK NEWPORT, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, GALLUP: Well, we can tell you that there have been different numbers by different polls as long as there have been polls. There are different methodologies. There are assumptions the different polling firms make and sometimes you just get different polls because they’re somewhat different time periods.
